Standard Jaguar wiring links fog lamps to both running lights and headlights in that if fog lights are switched on, headlights automatically switch off, and vice versa. Running lights always turn on with either fog lights or headlights. Two front and back running lights (our model has front and rear <em>side<\/em> marker running lights, too) can be turned on independently from either headlights or fog lights.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1971\" style=\"width: 906px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/running-lights.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1971\" src=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/running-lights.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"896\" height=\"652\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1971\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Running lights include optional side markers and the license plate light<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fog lights could be wired to turn on independently, but Jaguar standard wiring has them activated only with the running lights (or so the <em>Service Handbook<\/em> states, but see wiring discussion below).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1973\" style=\"width: 906px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/fogs-with-running.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1973\" src=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/fogs-with-running.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"896\" height=\"652\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1973\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1973\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fog lights with running lights (headlights cannot be switched on at the same time)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jaguar has two pairs of front headlamps; The rotary switch proved to be logically convenient as it moved from S (running lights) to H (headlights) and F (fog) since the running lights were turned on first, and then either the headlights or fogs where switched on next.<\/p>\n<p>But the linear XJ6 rockers remove the traditional rotary logic, and the result is somewhat awkward and confusing (especially since the fog lights have a separate rocker switch away from the main panel).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1980\" style=\"width: 899px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/rocker-panel-drawing.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1980\" src=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/rocker-panel-drawing.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"889\" height=\"299\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1980\" srcset=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/rocker-panel-drawing.png 889w, https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/rocker-panel-drawing-330x111.png 330w, https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/rocker-panel-drawing-768x258.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 889px) 100vw, 889px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1980\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stock rocker panel with exterior lights in the middle (except for fog lights)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>How do the fog and headlights work in tandem with the side lights? A slight-of-hand trick actually; the two center rockers are ganged together asymmetrically so that the headlight rocker automatically moves the side light rocker, but the side light rocker can also work independently. <\/p>\n<p>When the headlights are on, the fog lights won&#8217;t work at all; confusingly the fog lights are controlled by a separate rocker, leaving the driver to fiddle around with various rocker switch combinations depending on what&#8217;s turned on and off.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1989\" style=\"width: 1015px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIGHT-ROCKERS.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1989\" src=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIGHT-ROCKERS.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1005\" height=\"761\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1989\" srcset=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIGHT-ROCKERS.png 1005w, https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIGHT-ROCKERS-330x250.png 330w, https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIGHT-ROCKERS-768x582.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1005px) 100vw, 1005px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Headlight rocker ganged with the side light rocker, but side lights also work independently<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This solution is too clever by half since the driver must remember which rocker combinations trigger which lighting configurations. Alas, if only we had the old rotary light switch back!<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rocker_switch_wiring\"><\/span>Rocker switch wiring<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Jaguar XJ6 <em>Service Handbook<\/em> says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nThey [fog lamps] will not operate until the side lamps are switched ON and will be extinguished when the head lamps are switched ON.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But this logic is not supported by the official wiring diagram (C494925) for our 1972 XJ6 (chassis numbers 1L.53097 onward).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1996\" style=\"width: 906px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/wiring.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1996\" src=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/wiring.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"896\" height=\"584\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/wiring.png 896w, https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/wiring-330x215.png 330w, https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/XJ6\/wp-content\/uploads\/wiring-768x501.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Excerpted rocker switch wiring for fog, side and headlights<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Only when the side light rocker is <em>off<\/em> does current flow to the fog light rocker switch.
