{"id":1311,"date":"2021-09-01T20:03:30","date_gmt":"2021-09-01T20:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/aero\/?p=1311"},"modified":"2023-03-20T19:19:36","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T19:19:36","slug":"glossary-of-motorcycle-terms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/aero\/?p=1311","title":{"rendered":"Motorcycle terminology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The motorcycle world is a distinct sub-culture with its own terminology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aero Moto<\/strong>\u2122\u00a0 \u2014 Make of Kriss Motors cyclecar (project abandoned in 2022)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ape Hangers<\/strong> \u2014 Handlebars that are very high, and which often raise the rider\u2019s hands above his or her shoulders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apex<\/strong> \u2014 The middle or center point of a turn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bagger<\/strong> \u2014 A motorcycle with touring accessories like saddlebags, top box, trunk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bevel gear<\/strong> \u2014 Gear assembly that transfers power from the drive shaft to the rear wheel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big Twin<\/strong> \u2014 Any large V-Twin motorcycle engine typically 1000cc and bigger like the Moto Guzzi California models.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boxer Twin<\/strong> \u2014 A horizontal engine configuration with the two pistons opposing each other, commonly found on BMW twin-cylinder motorcycles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cafe Racer<\/strong> \u2014 Motorcycles modified to resemble racing motorcycles from the 1950\u2019s and 1960\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carving<\/strong> \u2014Refers to hard fast cornering on roads with many curves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Centerstand tang<\/strong> \u2014 A small lever attached to the centerstand, a mechanism attached to the frame that holds the motorcycle vertically upright.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chopper<\/strong> \u2014 Originally, a motorcycle that has had all non-essential parts removed (or \u201cchopped\u201d) to make it lighter and faster; generally applies to custom built motorcycles that may have a rigid frame (no rear suspension), an extended fork, and a stretched or elongated appearance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clip-ons<\/strong> \u2014 Handlebars that are clamped around the top of the fork tubes, rather than bolted to the top triple-tree that lowers a rider\u2019s upper body on the front of the motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crash bars<\/strong> \u2013 Curved engine guards that protect the front of the motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cruiser<\/strong> \u2014 A style of motorcycle generally equipped with a low seat and pullback handlebars; derived from customizing standard American motorcycles in the \u201960s and \u201970s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cush drive<\/strong> &#8211; A rear wheel dampening system designed to reduce stress on drive train components.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dresser<\/strong> \u2014 A large motorcycle designed for long-distance touring, especially with luggage and a windshield; see also <em>Bagger<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dual plugging<\/strong> \u2013 Adding a second spark plug to the cylinder head of a motorcycle engine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dual-sport<\/strong> \u2014 Street legal motorcycles that provide varying levels of off-road capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Engine cut-off switch<\/strong> \u2014 Usually located on the right handlebar switch housing, this switch allows the motorcyclist to turn off the engine without removing his or her hand from the handlebar; see also <em>kill switch<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fairing<\/strong> \u2014 Bodywork and\/or windshield at the front of the motorcycle designed to deflect the wind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fins<\/strong> \u2013 Heat sinks on an air cooled engine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fishtails<\/strong> &#8211; Exhaust tip resembling a fishtail when viewed from the side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flickability<\/strong> \u2014 Used to describe the agility of a motorcycle, or how quickly a rider can \u201cflick\u201d the bike from side to side in turns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foot pegs<\/strong> \u2013 The resting place for the riders or passengers feet on a motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Footprint<\/strong> &#8211; The tire portion in contact with the ground.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forks<\/strong> \u2014 The sprung metal tubes that connect the front wheel to the motorcycle triple-tree.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goose<\/strong> \u2013 Slang for a Moto Guzzi brand motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guzziology<\/strong> &#8211; a 650-page bible for Moto Guzzi owners, compiled by Dave Richardson.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hack<\/strong> &#8211; A motorcycle sidecar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hardtail<\/strong> &#8211; A motorcycle with no rear suspension.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highside<\/strong> \u2014 A type of crash resulting when the rear wheel starts to slide in a turn, then suddenly grips, flipping the bike sideways; see also <em>lowside<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Integral helmet<\/strong> &#8211; A motorcycle helmet that encloses the head completely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jet helmet<\/strong> &#8211; A motorcycle helmet with no chin guard or visor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jiffy<\/strong> &#8211; Sidestand or kickstand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kill switch<\/strong> \u2014 See engine cut-off switch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lowside<\/strong> \u2014 A crash that results from a wheel losing traction, allowing the bike to fall sideways; see also <em>highside<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>L Twin<\/strong> \u2013 A V-twin engine with its cylinders splayed apart at a 90\u00b0 angle, which creates a smoother running engine, like the Moto Guzzi 1046cc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mainshaft<\/strong> &#8211; The drive shaft in a gearbox which is connected to the engine and carries some of the gears.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Morgan<\/strong> &#8211; The original English 3-wheel innovator founded in 1910 by Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moto<\/strong> &#8211; Motor or motion; borrowed from Italian and derived from Latin <em>motus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Motocross<\/strong> \u2014 A light-weight motorcycle specifically designed for racing on a track.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moto Guzzi<\/strong> &#8211; Italian motorcycle manufacturer founded on March 15, 1921 as \u201cSociet\u00e0 Anonima Moto Guzzi\u201d in Corso Aurelio Saffi, Genoa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naked<\/strong> \u2014 Sport or standard motorcycles with minimum bodywork, fairings or windshields.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neck<\/strong> \u2013 The front of a motorcycle frame, where the steering head is located.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Petcock<\/strong> \u2014 Gasoline cutoff valve, usually found on the underside of fuel tank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Off-road<\/strong> \u2014 A motorcycle designed for use in the dirt or off-pavement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pillion<\/strong> \u2014 A small cushion designed for carrying a passenger mounted behind a solo saddle; also called <em>P-pad<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rake<\/strong> \u2014 Fork angle from perpendicular, usually expressed in degrees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rat<\/strong> \u2014 A running motorcycle with mismatched parts, minimal maintenance, and rough appearance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rear-sets<\/strong> &#8211; Multi-piece foot-controls including the pegs and pedals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reverse Trike<\/strong> &#8211; A three-wheeled vehicle with two wheels in front, like the Morgan Super Sport Aero.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rigid<\/strong> \u2013 A type of frame that has no swing arm; a one piece neck to rear axle frame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roost<\/strong> \u2014 The debris kicked up by a spinning rear wheel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scissor lift<\/strong> &#8211; Small rectangular lift with a hand crank used to support the engine oil sump.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shaft drive<\/strong> \u2014 A final drive system that utilizes a shaft to transmit power to the rear wheel, as opposed to a chain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spine<\/strong> \u2013 Main frame structure made up of two sheet steel pressings welded together along the center line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sport-tourer<\/strong> \u2014 A motorcycle that combines some of the handling and power of a sportbike, with touring amenities like saddlebags and comfortable ergonomics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sportbike<\/strong> \u2014 A motorcycle designed for speed and handling, usually with aerodynamic bodywork.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Springer<\/strong> \u2013 A motorcycle designed with large springs on the front forks to dampen and absorb road shock.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Standard<\/strong> \u2014 A motorcycle intended for general, all-around street use, typically with an upright seating posture and higher handlebars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step-thru<\/strong> &#8211; A frame layout with a low structure between the seat and the steering head.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stretch<\/strong> \u2014 Indicates a tank or frame elongated from its stock design.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Swing arm<\/strong> \u2013 The rear portion of a bike with the rear wheel mount, a pivoting structure that moves up and down with the rear suspension.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tank-slapper<\/strong> \u2014 Condition when handlebars slap back and forth at high speed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thumper<\/strong> \u2014 A single-cylinder, four-stroke motorcycle engine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trike<\/strong> \u2013 A three-wheeled motorcycle with two rear wheels and no sidecar; see also <em>reverse trike<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trail<\/strong> \u2014 Distance from the front axle\u2019s vertical position on the ground to the spot in front of it created by drawing a straight line from the angle of the forks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Triple clamp<\/strong> \u2014 Two metal plates that connect the fork tubes to the steering stem, sometimes also used as a handlebar mount; also referred to as a <em>triple tree<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Universal joint<\/strong> &#8211; Component used to transfer power between rotating shafts; often referred as a <em>U-joint<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Upside-down forks<\/strong> \u2013 Telescopic forks in which the lower section telescopes into the fixed upper tube.<\/p>\n<p><strong>V-Twin<\/strong> \u2013 A two-cylinder motorcycle engine with the cylinders arranged in an angled V like the Moto Guzzi California 1100 models.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/aero\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/large.v-twin_animation.gif.7d5a2b636186b1170d1d8b30d6f1fb91.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1774\" src=\"https:\/\/krissmotors.com\/aero\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/large.v-twin_animation.gif.7d5a2b636186b1170d1d8b30d6f1fb91.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"443\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Z Bar<\/strong> &#8211;
