Heater upgrade, part 3

See also heater upgrade part 1, part 2, and the 3D printed valve mount. The heater upgrade includes a more powerful motor with a choke, a new squirrel cage fan, and an electronic control module to control motor speeds and performance. The fan motor replaces the prior unit, but the......

Shapeways 3D printing

As part of the heater modification, the Jaguar OEM valve will be replaced with a new Four Seasons 74000, a readily available black plastic unit. The new valve requires a different mount, and this presented an opportunity to design something using OnShape and then physically manufacture it using 3D printing......

Engine block cradle

See engine block cradle design. After many moons hanging off the engine stand, the 2.4 engine block and related parts now rest, perhaps more comfortably, on a specially made cradle that sits on the floor. The height of the cradle performs two functions: 1) it prevents the engine weight from......

Accelerator

Jaguar must have had a minor fixation on accelerator controls since they designed twelve different setups for the 2.4 Mk2 alone (some of the proliferation was necessitated, of course, by right-hand drive models). All control systems work in a similar way with various shafts, linkages, and control bars. The pedal......

Making gaskets

With the front seal replaced, the timing chain cover plate is ready to be bolted back onto the engine block. However, the cover plate gasket is no longer available for the 2.4 engine; we ordered a 3.8 engine gasket anyway to see how thin the material needs to be. The photo......

Front body dolly

With the front suspension out of the body shell, we attached the body dolly on the bumper side of the suspension mount using the same four mounting holes (bolts pass through the 2.5 x 2.5″ cross bar). The front dolly has swivel castors to enable easy maneuvering of the body......

Rear body dolly

With the rear axle and suspension removed from the body shell, the rear body dolly must exactly match the existing leaf spring mounting holes. We started at the center line and measured the distance to each rear outside hole: 39.875″ from hole to hole, and 19.937″ from the center line......

Body dolly

Dollies are used to move around body shells without suspensions. Commercial “one-size-fits-all” dollies are not optimized for the Jaguar type of chassis. Lin Rose developed a simple but elegant solution with caster wheels and square steel tubing, and we’ll follow his custom design. A larger front wheel will help adjust......
