Horn restoration

UPDATE 10/04/17: The vintage Jaguar horns have been unpredictable since they were installed in 2015. Every part of the circuit was carefully checked — the fuse box, relay, wiring leads to the horns, ground connections, column ground, and horn switch — and no defect was found. Except both beautifully restored......

Exterior door handles

The chrome on all four door handles was acceptable, but not up to the better quality of all the other chrome (see chrome assessment), so the handle bodies were re-chromed. After cleaning, the innards were lightly blasted to get rid of old caked-on road grime. With a little grease and......

Door check arms

Like all car doors, the Mk2 has metal check arms that prevent the door from swinging out too far on its hinge. After CAD plating, the arms look like new. Lin Rose generously sent some extra neoprene stop cushions cut out of 1/2″ rubber sheet with a 1.125″ hole saw.......

Radiator detailing

The Jaguar’s radiator was recored, according to the few service records available, around 1995. The recore process basically mates the original frame housing and the cooling hose connections to a new assembly with the coolant tubes and air fins. Visual inspection shows that the “new” core — now twenty years......

Gearbox-overdrive external restoration

Back in December 2014 we assessed the gearbox-overdrive unit, and now it’s time to do the restoration work. The gears worked fine prior to disassembly in June 2014, so the internal mechanisms will be left untouched. There was so much grime that the integrity of the seals couldn’t be determined......

Fuel filter re-do

After cleaning and replacement fiber washers, hardware, and a yellow filter, the fuel filter assembly looks like new. Here’s the before and after comparison. The replacement filter is the long type with a spring on the bottom to hold its position. Since the filtering area more than doubles, this should......

Accelerator

Jaguar must have had a minor fixation on accelerator controls since they designed twelve different setups for the 2.4 Mk2 alone (some of the proliferation was necessitated, of course, by right-hand drive models). All control systems work in a similar way with various shafts, linkages, and control bars. The pedal......

Wiper system, part 2

The Lucas DR3 wiper motor was restored back to perfect working condition (it worked during our pre-disassembly drives and was actually tested in the rain … however, it provided poor, nearly useless coverage across the windscreen) by Peter Gigliotti. The motor pigtail required some additional attention, including some new crimp-on......

Boot lock, bonnet latch/catch

The book lock, bonnet safety hook, and the bonnet catch were all CAD plated. Re-assembly of these shiny new parts is a pleasant task … except the torque spring that operates the bonnet safety hook was either lost or didn’t survive the CAD plating process. Unfortunately this little spring is......

Bonnet hinges

According to the JCNA Mk2 Judging Guide, the bonnet hinges should be the body color (and not sure whether this also refers to the hinge springs). We elected to CAD plate the hinges and springs instead, and added new unpainted hardware fasteners. The final hinge fit adjustments (rather difficult to......
