Paint celebration

After the final buff and glaze, the paint phase of the project is finally done. Time to celebrate! The drive back to the Kriss Motors garage was easy – just a few miles – even without a windscreen. As a sort of exclamation point to mark this milestone, the little......

Exterior paint

We were expecting the exterior paint job to be completed by the end of May, but it’s difficult to accurately forecast this kind of work. Now, after lots of sanding, adjusting, masking, and filling, the final BRG exterior paint is on. The surface still needs buffing and glazing to remove......

Paint update

Two and half weeks after driving the Jaguar to Beaver Brook Auto Body, the exterior has been carefully sanded down in preparation for the first coat of British Racing Green urethane base paint (it’s a slow process). See also the post about paint chemistry. A few minor imperfections were fixed,......

Wheel hub spinner tool

Removing or tightening the wire wheel hub spinner is somewhat disquieting because the usual method is to whack the end of the spinner with a special copper/hide hammer! Even in a skilled hand, it’s hard not to dent and scratch the spinner arm. And the leverage needed to loosen a......

One of the quaint Jaguar Mark 2 details are four little filler pieces fitted on the “shut face panel” of all four doors. Made of aluminum, each piece has a handmade wood plug fastened to the door panel with #5 wood screws. These fillers could be painted the body color......

Cosmetics (literally)

Lin Rose detailed his oil sump dipstick with nail polish … a great and inexpensive idea. Our dipstick was badly pitted on the stem, so it was first sanded and then sprayed with the cylinder block color to match the engine. The nail polish was applied to the recessed tip,......

Air cleaner refresh

About a year ago, the air cleaner was removed, and today a repainted cleaner had its test fitting on the restored engine block. The colors have been slightly modified. The oil container rim, originally black, was treated with high temperature aluminum POR paint. The three side clips, also originally black,......

Petrol tank and fuel level sender

See also Smiths small gauges and petrol tank removal posts. In anticipation of the tank installation, the petrol filler cavity on the left rear of the body was painted with POR 15 and fitted with a new grommet. The POR 15 coating should withstand gasoline drips better than the exterior......
